Καλαματιανός Kalamatianos 7/8 Fast

Traditional Greek Costumes (c) datafox

Okay, let's start with the more complicated rhythms. The Kalamatianos, which originated in Kalamata (hence the name), is similar to the Syrtos. The steps are also similar. But there is big difference: Kalamatianos has seven beats a measure. The seven beats consist of two groups: One of three and another one of four beats. Beat number one and beat number four are alsways stronger than the rest.

There are two different styles of this rhythm. The first version is the more light pop version, where also the weak beats are emphasized. You can easily count along. It sounds like a combination of waltz (3 beats) and march (4 beats) alternating.

The second style is the more traditional one. The rhythm sounds lighter and more elegant.
